As a Turkish user, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to watch platforms like Discord being banned, and I can’t help but feel like this isn’t the solution we need. Instead of banning, we should be focusing on open communication first. Why not reach out to Discord and give them a chance to understand the concerns? If after a dialogue, nothing changes, then maybe stronger actions like penalties can be taken. But banning right away only frustrates regular users, who are just trying to use the platform for harmless activities like gaming or staying in touch with friends.
The Wrong Target: Bans Don’t Stop the Real Problem
What really bothers me is that these bans don’t address the root issue. The ones misusing stolen data and pretending to be something they’re not—those individuals aren’t affected by these bans. They’ll just fire up a VPN and keep going, while we, the normal users, are the ones who get punished.
As someone who uses the internet like everyone else, I’m especially frustrated with these people who exploit the system. They act like they’re untouchable, but let me tell you this: if they’re threatening you, they can’t do anything. These people are all talk, hiding behind a keyboard. So if anyone tries to intimidate you with their so-called power, don’t be scared—they’ve got nothing.
A Valid Concern: Data Sharing
I can understand, to a certain degree, why the government might be frustrated with Discord’s refusal to share data. National security is important, and in some cases, having access to certain information can help deal with real issues like cybercrime. But even here, I think a better approach is communication. Instead of banning, work out a way to get the data that’s really necessary for specific cases, without infringing on the privacy of regular users.
We Need a Smarter Approach
Banning doesn’t fix the core issue, and it just drives users to unsafe alternatives. What we need is a more nuanced approach. Go after the bad actors who are really causing harm, not the platform itself. Technology can be used to track down the real offenders and deal with them, instead of making everyone pay for the actions of a few. As a Turkish user, I know the frustration all too well, but I also believe that we can handle these issues in a smarter way that doesn’t punish everyone.
